Frequently Asked Questions
BGC Winnipeg FAQ
What does BGC Winnipeg do?
We operate community-based Clubs and numerous youth development programs to our members, offering a safe alternative to the streets during the evening and after-school hours. Our agency focuses on the well-being of children and youth by teaching them the importance of healthy living, personal growth and social development.
The essence of our work is through a preventative and developmental approach to tackling a broad range of critical issues facing young people today. This is accomplished through five core program areas promoting healthy development:
- Sport, Recreation, & Physical Activity
- Arts & Cultural Appreciation
- Education & Career Exploration
- Health Awareness & Life-Skills
- Leadership & Service to Community
With positive role models and mentors at the forefront of our Clubs and programs, children and youth have the opportunity to achieve their full potential in a safe and facilitated environment.
How can I get my child to become a member?
Signing up your child to become a member is easy. All we need is a parent or guardian to sign a membership form! Visit the Club you'd like your child to attend and any one of our staff would be happy to help. You can also call our head office at (204) 982-4940 to ask any questions about your child becoming a member.
How much does it cost?
There is no cost to become a member or to take part in any of the programs and services we offer.
What types of activities take place at the Clubs?
Each of our Clubs offer activities that are tailored to the interest of its members. To get an idea of the activities we offer, review any one of our Clubs and download their monthly calendar. We also provide a healthy meal/snack to kids right after school to ensure they receive the fuel they need to take on the activities our Clubs plan for them.
What time does programming start/end?
Programming starts right after the school bell rings (3:30) and goes until 5:00 or 5:15. For our larger Clubs, we have the younger kids come for first group, and the older kids start anywhere between 6:00 and 6:30 until 8:00 or 8:30.
What age groups do you work with?
Our After School programs work with children and youth ages 6-18. We have additional programs operating for youth from 18-29 as well.
I love working with kids. How can I get involved with the organization?
There are several ways to get involved. You can volunteer your time or even apply for a job if one is available! Find out how to get involved.
Where do we have Clubs?
We have Clubs all around Winnipeg. Find out where we're located today.
What if there are no Clubs in my neighbourhood?
Our Clubs do not have boundaries so you don't have to live in the neighbourhood or community to attend. Your child is free to attend any one of our Clubs! Please note that we do not provide transportation to and from our drop-in programming. If you would like to request information on how to start one in your neighbourhood, please contact us at (204) 982-4940.
I received an email about One Great Lottery? Are you part of this?
Yes. We are excited to be a part of the One Great Lottery [OGL] program. You may receive periodic emails from OGL to purchase tickets and support the work of BGC Winnipeg and other great charities across Manitoba. You can always opt out of these emails by unsubscribing.
What are your greatest needs?
In terms of funding, our most pressing needs are around staffing and food costs which make up the bulk of our day-to-day operations. Club staff are the people who make the biggest impact on the experience kids have in Clubs. They are the ones who teach and mentor, plan outings, drive kids to events, and prepare snacks and meals. Unrestricted donations allow BGC staff the flexibility to helps kids in the ways that are most meaningful for their own needs and interests.
