Nearly 12 years ago, Angel arrived in Canada, unsure of what the future would hold. During her very first week at Sister McNamara School, a new friend invited her to attend BGC Winnipeg after school. With little hesitation, Angel’s parents said yes — a simple decision that would go on to shape the course of her life.
What began as an after-school program quickly became something much more.
“BGC became a space where I felt safe, supported, and seen,” Angel shares.
Over the years, BGC Winnipeg has been a constant presence in her life. As Angel grew, so did her involvement — from Club member, to teen mentor, and now staff member. Through programs like girls’ soccer, CanU, and summer camp, she found a sense of belonging. Creative programs helped her discover her voice, and the steady encouragement of staff helped her believe in herself and her potential.
Today, Angel is in her third year at the University of Manitoba, completing prerequisites for the Nursing program while also working toward a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Her post-secondary journey has come with challenges, stress, and moments of uncertainty — but also a deep sense of purpose.
“I know I am building something important,” she says. “A future in healthcare, where I can give back and care for others the way I have been cared for.”
Receiving a BGC Winnipeg bursary for the 2025–2026 school year made a profound difference. The financial support eased the burden of tuition costs and allowed Angel to focus on her studies and well-being.
“It lifted a weight I didn’t even realize I was carrying,” she explains. “That support gave me the peace of mind to stay present, focused, and hopeful.”
Looking ahead, Angel hopes to become a registered nurse and eventually a nurse practitioner, or possibly continue her education at the graduate level. No matter where her path leads, she knows BGC Winnipeg will always be part of her story.
Her journey is a powerful reminder of the lifelong impact of community support — and how a single invitation to an after-school program can open doors to a bright and meaningful future.
