Jasmine’s journey with the CSI Summer Learning Enrichment Program began in 2008, but its impact continues to shape her career as an educator. From her first role as a High School Assistant at William Whyte School to her current success as a teacher, Jasmine’s story illustrates how CSI not only transforms the lives of children but also equips its staff with invaluable skills and opportunities.
Jasmine initially joined CSI at her mother’s suggestion. “When I applied, I just thought it looked like a fun summer program,” she recalls. “I didn’t expect to build relationships with the students the way I did.” The depth of these connections is evident even years later, as former students will greet her with a heartfelt hug and gratitude for her role in the program.
Although Jasmine didn’t pursue education immediately, her experiences at CSI left a lasting impression. After a few years in healthcare, she realized her true passion and returned to school to become a teacher. Throughout her training, Jasmine remained connected to CSI, which provided her with hands-on experience that complemented her academic learning.
“I did my practicum placement through BGC Winnipeg’s Power Up program, and it gave me experience beyond the classroom,” Jasmine explains. “I learned how to build relationships quickly, communicate with parents, and manage unexpected challenges. Those skills set me up for success.”
Jasmine’s return to CSI as an instructor from 2019 to 2023 – including the unique challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic – deepened her expertise. “The smaller groups allowed for more personalized interactions with students, but it also required creative planning.” she says
CSI also opened doors to employment opportunities for Jasmine. Substituting at schools where she had worked with CSI allowed her to seamlessly integrate into the community. “When I walked into a classroom, students would recognize me and say, ‘It’s Miss Jasmine, my CSI teacher!’ It gave me an instant connection and made transitioning into teaching roles much easier.”
By the time Jasmine graduated, she was well-prepared for the demands of the profession. “I went from my last day of school in April to running my own classroom in May,” she says. “CSI gave me the confidence to manage a classroom, communicate with parents, and handle assessments. I’m so thankful for that foundation.”
For Jasmine, CSI was more than a summer job; it was a life-changing experience. “If you’re thinking about going into education but aren’t sure, give CSI a try. It’s the perfect test run,” she advises. “You’re never alone – there’s always someone to support you, and the team is amazing.”
Her story underscores the program’s dual impact: while children benefit from academic enrichment and social development, staff gain leadership skills, professional experience, and lasting connections.
“CSI is a launchpad,” Jasmine says. “It’s where I discovered my passion for teaching, built lifelong relationships, and found my footing as an educator. For that, I’ll always be grateful.”
