This summer, hundreds of children and youth in Winnipeg discovered new experiences, made lasting friendships, and strengthened their learning through the CSI Summer Learning Enrichment Program.
Operating at 12 school sites in the Winnipeg School Division, CSI combined academic enrichment with hands-on activities, cultural learning, physical recreation, and community connection – all in a safe, supportive environment. From splash pads to science experiments, zoo trips to talent shows, every day was an opportunity to learn, grow, and have fun.
Hands-On Learning and Creativity
Participants tackled exciting STEAM challenges – from building solar ovens to creating robotic hands out of recycled materials, engineering protective coverings for egg drops, and constructing towering paper chains. They explored literacy and numeracy through games, reading challenges, and group projects, all while developing collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving skills.
Unforgettable Field Trips
CSI youth visited the Assiniboine Park Zoo, Kildonan Park Pool, University of Winnipeg RecPlex, splash pads, the library, and more. Some sites held special market days where participants created and “sold” crafts, learning about money management. Others invited guest presenters to share Indigenous games, environmental lessons, and cultural traditions.
Special Moments at Every Site
- Machray celebrated caretaker Igor’s retirement, adapted to wildfire smoke with indoor fun, and enjoyed meals like pizza quesadillas and French toast from Mr. Dan.
- David Livingstone took advantage of the new splash pad by Turtle Island and students got to take home a bag of books thanks to Share the Magic!
- William Whyte wrapped up summer with a talent show and plenty of water fun.
- Dufferin/Pinkham soared with paper airplane designs, built solar ovens, and crafted robotic hands.
- Victoria Albert emphasized soft skills through performances, team building, and camp days.
- John M. King loved Market Day, Water Fun Day with Sister Mac, and egg drop engineering.
- Norquay welcomed new friends from École Victoria Albert School, grew grass for mini houses, and ran their own “Norquay Mall.”
- Lord Selkirk kept active at the RecPlex, zoo, and Kildonan Park Pool.
- Champlain celebrated with Spirit Week, Birthday Day, Summer-Ween and so much more.
Beyond the Fun – Real Impact
CSI supports social-emotional growth and ensures children have access to nutritious meals, safe spaces, and opportunities they might not otherwise experience. Each child brought something unique to the program, and every moment – whether at the pool, on a field trip, or in the classroom – was a step toward building confidence, skills, and brighter futures.
As one participant put it best: “Why is CSI so short? I wish it was all summer long!”
We couldn’t agree more. Thank you to our incredible staff, volunteers, school partners, and families for making this summer unforgettable. We can’t wait to see everyone back next year for another season of fun, learning, and connection!
